Microsoft has changed its licensing restrictions for terminal server hosting like we, all hosting providers, have. In order to be in compliance with Microsoft licensing, we can only host Office licenses that are Office 365 Apps for Enterprise (formerly ProPlus), E3, or E5.
If you don’t own Office 365 Apps for Enterprise, E3, or E5, then you have 2 options for having Office installed on your Summit server:
- Buy an Office 365 license that is Apps for Enterprise, E3, or E5. Then we can install it on your server for no additional monthly fee and a 1-time $129 install fee.
- Lease Office from Summit. (Pricing below)

How do I know if I even need Office installed on my Summit server?
-
QuickBooks and Excel: By default, QuickBooks can export to .CSV files without Excel installed on the Summit server.
- If you want them exported to .XLS files you need to have Excel/Office installed on the Summit server.
- CSV files are just raw data dump-type files and have no Excel formatting as XLS files do. You can copy/paste CSV files to your local computer and open it in Excel there.
- Do you need to export to XLS files? Or is CSV then copy/pasting the file to your local computer fine? If you need to export to .XLS, and be able to open the file on the Summit server, then yes, you need Office/Excel installed.
-
QuickBooks and Outlook: By default, you can email out of QuickBooks using their WebMail function. It will require some setup on your part, like SMTP and port settings, but it can work.
- If this works for you, then you do not need Office/Outlook installed on your Summit server.
- If you need QuickBooks to send emails in and out of Outlook, then yes, you need Office/Outlook installed on your Summit server
- Sage and Office: If you need to export to Excel or email out of Outlook, yes, you need Excel/Outlook/Office installed in order for these functions to work.
What if I own Office 365 but it’s not Apps for Enterprise, E3, or E5?
- You can either lease a license from Summit. (Pricing above)
- Upgrade your current 365 licenses to either "Apps for Enterprise", "E3", or "E5".
- You must be the admin of your 365 account
- Log in to your Office 365 Account - MS Office 365 Login
- Click View Subscriptions in the middle of the page
- Click Change Subscriptions
- Pick either "Apps for Enterprise", "E3", or "E5"
- You should be able to choose which users you want to upgrade

Important: Apps for Enterprise does NOT include Microsoft email services. If your email runs through Microsoft’s servers now, do NOT choose Apps for Enterprise. You will need E3 or E5 to keep your email with Microsoft. If you use Gmail, or Yahoo for email, for example, Apps for Enterprise will work for you.
